Timber Frame Tower

Project type

Structural Design

Date

September-December 2023

Location

University of Oregon

In my third year, I enrolled in a rigorous Structural Behaviors course that delved deeply into the fundamental physics governing structural designs, elucidating the principles underpinning their feasibility. The apex of this course materialized in our final project; a group project focused on engineering a timber tower crafted solely from wood components interconnected by strings.

Integral to this project was the meticulous consideration of the structural system inherent within our tower. Utilizing the RFEM software, we meticulously constructed a detailed 2D model, mapping out and analyzing the intricate forces and structural behaviors shaping our design. This undertaking proved immensely instructive in mastering the nuances of RFEM's programming capabilities, allowing us to seamlessly visualize and interpret the dynamic interplay of forces within our design.

A crucial aspect entailed formulating hypotheses regarding potential failure points within our structure, which we adeptly conveyed through comprehensive diagrams and a refined 2D rendition of our design. This process illuminated the complexities of structural analysis, enabling us to grasp the intricacies of anticipating and visualizing potential failure modes, thereby enhancing our overall understanding of structural behaviors and design resilience.
