Initiative 99 Competiton
Project type
Initiative 99 Affordable Housing/3D Printing
Date
September-December 2023
Location
University of Oregon
In a recent studio endeavor, our participation in the Initiative 99 competition centered on leveraging 3D technology for the creation of economically viable housing solutions catering to low-income families. Working within a collaborative group of three, we synergized our collective design expertise and conceptual visions to conceive 'Pebble and Pond.' This project served as a pivotal milestone, fostering teamwork while honing our communication and collaborative abilities. It provided a valuable opportunity to harness our complementary skills and merge ideas to innovate solutions collectively.
Employing abstract curved forms within confined spatial parameters, our project necessitated a resourceful approach. Confronted with space constraints, we devised a strategic resolution wherein our units interconnected along curved walls. This inventive design not only mitigated unit costs but also facilitated the provision of affordable housing, offering residents a distinctive spatial experience within limited square footage.
Following the completion of our design development in Rhino, our progression culminated in the realization of our vision through 3D printing. This phase involved the fabrication of individual units, allowing us to construct a physical model. This tangible representation served as a pivotal tool in comprehensively capturing and elucidating the circulation dynamics and spatial interactions intended for users within the design.
